You have a postal address and a phone number. Email allows your customers another means to contact you. Depending on what you do, you may recognise this as being very useful. It's worth remembering though that email can be used for things where people wouldn't write or phone. Customers may have queries you can answer, or you can get positive and useful feedback about the services you provide. People will spend the time to put what they really think rather than trying to answer on the spot.
While you can set up a free email account, being able to give an address like 'yourname@yourbusiness.co.uk' is much more professional.
Emails on an in house server are pretty much instant. They are trackable, people have time to think about what they're being asked and formulate a good reply. It allows busy workers to answer queries properly with minimal stress. Having your own email system allows you to regulate it's use and ensure that your communication is secure.
