Networking encompasses file and printer sharing, Internet access, including the web, remote access, email and more.
File & Printer sharing means that you can access the files you need no matter which computer your on. It means that you wont loose files on a specific computer and not be sure which one it was. It keeps everyone's work organised and accessible. For a company with more than one computer it's also an essential part of your data backup and disaster recovery strategies. Any printers connected to the network can also be accessed by any of the computers on the network.
As an example, take a small hair dressers that have one reception computer and an office computer. There isn't room for a printer on the computer on reception, so it got put on the one upstairs. Before they were networked, you had to use the right computer to get access to the files you made on it, and if you wanted to do any printing you had to take the documents with you on CD or USB stick, run upstairs (if you weren't already) and turn the computer on and then print. Well now, not only do both computers have internet access, but you can turn the upstairs computer on remotely, find the files you want and print them off, without having to go upstairs. That way there was someone on reception to welcome any new customers.
You may want to contact a supplier out of office hours and need a reply as soon as possible using email. You may want to check on prices using the web. Whatever it is that you want to do, networking will allow you to take your Internet access to all the computers you want it on and keep you in control.
Say your at home on a day off, and you have a call from one of your employees explaining that there has been a problem from a supplier, or a document that needs your attention. It may even be that they don't have a password they need to get on with some work and you can't give them the password, but you just want to let them in. Rather than going out the house and having to drive to work to let them carry on, with remote access you can go to your computer at home, connect to the computer at work, see what's on their screen, and sort it out. You just saved yourself a lot of time.
If you don't have a network already I can set one up for you to provide you with any services you might be interested in.
If you want more from an existing network I'd be happy to talk to you to see if there is more potential that can be tapped from what you already have.

Many small businesses don't realise how accessible the power of the web is to them and what it can do for their business. If in doubt, ask me!
